THT – Tetrahydrothiophene (C4H8S)
Tetrahydrothiophene (THT) is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₄H₈S. It is a sulfur-containing heterocyclic compound with a strong odor. THT is commonly used as an odorant in natural gas, making gas leaks detectable by smell, as natural gas is otherwise odorless.
Effects on health
Tetrahydrothiophene (THT) exposure can irritate the respiratory system, skin, and eyes, with symptoms like headaches, nausea, and coughing at low levels, and more severe effects such as breathing difficulty or dermatitis with prolonged exposure. Although not highly toxic, chronic exposure may lead to long-term respiratory issues and increased sensitivity to the compound.
